Romitorio Santedame Chianti Classico D.O.C.G. Gran Selezione 75cl (2015) RUFFINO

When Ruffino bought the Santedame estate in the 1980s the Colorino was an almost extinct vine, used in the past only to give colour to Chianti. However, there was an old Colorino vineyard located near the Romitorio, a medieval resting shelter for those on religious pilgrimage to Rome, from which Ruffino decided to create a very special wine, one of its kind, thus enhancing a native and typical vine of the Chianti Classico area. Romitorio since became a pioneer, of an importance that Ruffino has always attributed to the research and rediscovery of the native Tuscan vines and to their relationship with their terroir. Today, after years of studies, Ruffino produces limited quantities of a Sangiovese-based Gran Classico Chianti Classico, with a small percentage of Colorino, with the idea of ​​maintaining and continuing to write the story of a cru that has a great past and a wonderful future. During production this wine undergoes ageing in large oak barrels for 24 months plus a further 6 months refinement in bottle, resulting in a wine with intense ruby ​​red colour, a striking bouquet with typical scents of ripe red fruit accompanied by elegant balsamic notes, and a fine and elegant structure in the mouth, finishing with refinement and intensity. What's more, its perfectly suitable for long ageing if cellared correctly.
